Memphis Grizzlies: Five Important Aspects to Consider Versus Indiana
Evaluation of MarShon Brooks
Friday’s Grizz win over the Atlanta Hawks was highlighted by the strong — and perfect — play by shooting guard MarShon Brooks.
This did not come as much of a surpise to the Memphis Grizzlies because this is all he has done for the team since joining them late in the 2017-18 season.
Including last night’s victory, Brooks has only appeared in eight games for Memphis. However, in those eight games, he has produced 18+ points on six different occasions.
The Grizzlies have a plethora of options at the shooting guard position, and the consistency of MarShon makes things even more difficult on the coaching staff. So many guys on this preseason roster deserve more than just a few minutes of playing time, and thankfully the roster is versatile and can be interchanged at multiple positions. Regardless, MarShon Brooks absolutely needs to see the floor.
In 2018-19, the Memphis Grizzlies will remain a defensive-minded ball club. By looking at a log of nightly final scores, casual fans may think it is quite the opposite as they have produced 115 and 120 points, respectively, in their first two preseason meetings. You have to take a closer look. This club will need a perimeter scorer(s) to depend upon once the regular season arrives.
Offense has been generated by the performance of solid team defense in addition to improved floor spacing. As Beale Street Bears discussed this morning, there is less of a dependency on the pick-‘n’-roll now. This roster has guys that can create offense for themselves if necessary. Namely, MarShon Brooks is that guy who was a key to success on Friday.
Saturday’s meeting with the Indiana Pacers will be another measuring stick for Brooks’ offense. This opponent is chock full of offense and can play incredible defense, too. With Indiana’s Victor Oladipo roaming the perimeter, it will be a tough task for Brooks to get good looks at the basket. However, this is the test the Grizzlies need in order to evaluate the truth of MarShon’s scoring game.
