Memphis Grizzlies: What is Omri Casspi to the 2018-19 Team?
By Blake Monroe
What Casspi Needs to Offer
As previously stated, Omri Casspi is no Marc Gasol. The Memphis Grizzlies do not need him to be.
This roster needs a versatile big man that can provide additional scoring when the team is in a rut. They can also use versatility and playmaking ability in the second unit.
Though this sounds like the player the Grizzlies hope to develop rookie Jaren Jackon Jr. into, that developmental project may take time. Until then, Memphis will have to settle with less scoring; an aspect of their game they are trying to increase.
For years, the Memphis Grizzlies have played tough defense — still want to — but they are also trying to pick up the speed of the game while producing higher-scoring games. This is necessary to compete with teams such as the Golden State Warriors and Houston Rockets, given this club wants to be in the Western Conference conversation with their retooled roster.
Omri Casspi fits in as a player that needs open shot attempts, but can create for others in spurts. If he can be on the court simultaneously with a point guard such as Mike Conley or Jevon Carter, then his numbers will increase. If he is on the court with a group of Grizzlies that cannot create open looks for the wing positions, then Casspi will have a tough time being effective.
