As the Memphis Grizzlies take hold to an early two-game winning streak, there is one player missing that many fans had expected to see.

Voted the best defender of this years’ draft class, the Memphis Grizzlies‘ second round pick — Jevon Carter — has not seen any regular season action.

Carter appeared in all five preseason games, averaging 2.6 points, 1.2 rebounds, and one assist in 11 minutes of playing time. Before this, Jevon Carter had much better success in the 2018 NBA Summer League for the Grizzlies.

There, he was averaging 10 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 1.1 steals per contest. These numbers are only a small glimpse of the potential this West Virginia Mountaineer star brings to the table.

Even with the thumb injury before the season, many expected to see the college star point guard out on the court. But with the rotation of Mike Conley and Shelvin Mack, the likelihood that he will play much on Beale Street this year is slim.

Assigned Monday by the Memphis Grizzlies to the their G-League affiliate, the Memphis Hustle, the team hopes to develop Jevon Carter while they sort out their backcourt logjam.

For now, reports say that he is just participating in training camp for the Hustle, but with the current success of the Grizzlies’ point guards, including a fourth quarter deal-sealing push by Mack, Memphis may chose to leave him there to keep him working to become a well-rounded player.

Carter is a player that is as good on offense as he is a defensive player. Wherever the team feels he is better suited, he will continue to prove himself on the court. That is who he is — a workhorse.
