Five-Star Defense

No matter how much of a fight the Washington Wizards bring to the FedEx Forum on Tuesday, they will have a difficult time scoring the basketball.

During the offseason, so much effort was put forth by the Memphis Grizzlies’ Front Office to build upon their defensive-minded culture. The goal was to piece together a super team, if you will, of defensive players.

Though it was shaky at first, and even though small forward Kyle Anderson is still finding his rhythm within a new system, the Grizzlies are quickly achieving their goal. This is who they had envisioned to become.

Memphis currently ranks second in the NBA in points allowed per game at 101.0. They only trail the star-studded Boston Celtics, which is a team with high hopes of reaching the NBA Finals.

In comparison, the Washington Wizards are dead last in this particular category at 125.0 points allowed per game. Over their last three games, they have given up 132.0 points per contest. This does not bode well for their chances against the Grizzlies.

Washington’s five-time All-Star point guard, John Wall, is having a rough time of finding his offense through six games. He is shooting just 12% from beyond the three-point arc. His 49.8% true shooting percentage ranks the lowest of his nine-year NBA career.

Wall is the initiator for the Wizards’ offense, and if he cannot get it going, then it will be a long night for his team. He boosts Bradley Beal, Otto Porter, and others with his intensity and playmaking ability.

The Memphis Grizzlies’ backcourt needs to clamp down on John Wall, and if they do, their luck at home and on the defensive side of the ball will stay true.
