Memphis Grizzlies’ Scoring Off Turnovers Is Key To Success
By Chris Kern
The Memphis Grizzlies defense has been forcing a lot of turnovers to start the season. Their ability to score of these turnovers are a key part of the offense.
The Memphis Grizzlies have always been a team that prides themselves on the defensive end. Being a good defensive team isn’t going to win you as many games as it once did though.
That doesn’t mean defense is useless in today’s game. The Grizzlies defensive intensity has been one of the main reasons they have gotten off to their 8-5 start to the season.
For a team that plays a slow pace like the Grizzlies, you have to be able to get easy buckets and they have done that.
They aren’t a great half-court offensive team but they have been able to find ways to combat that by creating turnovers to get easy baskets.
Before the recent loss at home to the Utah Jazz, Memphis had won the turnover margin in each of their first 11 games.
They do a good job getting passing lanes as they are second in the NBA with 9.7 steals per game. Marc Gasol leads the team with 1.8 steals which is 7th in the NBA.
Those steals have led to the Grizzlies forcing 18.1 turnovers per game which is 2nd in the league behind Oklahoma City.

Those forced turnovers have led to 22.5 points off turnovers per game which is tied with Oklahoma City for the best mark in the NBA.
The Grizzlies being able to score off turnovers is a big part of their offense and it needs to continue to be a big part going forward.
Their points off of turnovers have accounted for 21.8% of their offense which is the best mark in the league by more than a whole percent.
Mike Conley and Gasol have continued to play better offensively but they still need to continue to get easy baskets.
Memphis has struggled to score in the half-court offense which has led to them going through stretches where they don’t make a shot for a three or four-minute span.
The Memphis Grizzlies have to continue to get easy baskets and if they can do that, expect a lot more wins in the coming weeks.
