Sticking to Their Guns

Prior to the start of the season, NBA so-called experts were not picking the Memphis Grizzlies to be in contention of reaching the Playoffs.

Through all of the offseason Draft picks and Free-Agency signings, and even the implementation of new uniforms and a new court design, it has all aligned for the Grizzlies. This team is not going to change just to match the rest of the league, especially the high-octane offense known as the Golden State Warriors.

Memphis currently owns the league’s top team defense, allowing just 100.2 points per game. Both of the Grizzles’ rookies, plus nearly all of their other offseason acquisitions pride themselves on defense first and foremost. The Front Office knew that offense would be an issue, but they wanted to trust their defensive culture in order to collect points on the opposite end.

Through 17 games, their plan is working. They are atop the Western Conference, plus they own the league’s best defense. Slowly but surely, their offense is developing, too. The defensive effort has been stopping opponents in their tracks and setting up good looks on the offensive end.

The Memphis Grizzlies are betting on their defense to win a championship, just like they did at the start of this decade. 17 games in, it is time for the rest of the association to take notice of Beale Street.
