Jevon Carter

Jevon Carter was selected 32nd in the 2018 NBA draft out of West Virginia. Some thought he would spend more time with the Grizzlies but they haven’t needed him thus far.

With the way, Shelvin Mack has played there has been no reason for him to get any minutes and it also led to Andrew Harrison being released.

He was known as a defensive stopper in college but he also had a good offensive game.

He will be able to defend at a high level in the NBA but he needs to be able to do a little bit more offensively if he wants to be able to stick around for the long haul.

Carter has played well early in the season averaging 20.4 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 5.3 assists per game. He is doing that on 46% from the field and 33% from three-point range.

He has made his presence felt on the defensive end just like you would expect. Through seven games he is averaging 3.3 steals per game.

He hasn’t been the number one option on offense which is an adjustment but he still does a lot and he and Goodwin form one of the best G-League backcourts.

His best game of the season so far was in a one-point loss to the Sioux Falls Skyforce. He finished with 29 points, 6 assists, and 5 steals. He shot 13-21 in that game while making one three-pointer.

It may not seem that way early on but the Grizzlies are very high on him. He is a part of their long-term plans so they’ll want to get some NBA minutes whenever they can.

It’s better for him to play in the G-League than just sitting on the bench. He will continue to work on his game as he looks to potentially become the backup point guard of the future or maybe even more.

Carter hasn’t had the impact in the NBA he may have wanted to but he has played well with the Hustle. It won’t be on ideal circumstances but he will make his NBA debut sometime this season, and he will be ready for the challenge whenever it comes.
