3 Reasons The Memphis Grizzlies Should Trade For Markelle Fultz
By Chris Kern
Potential Point Guard Of The Future
Markelle Fultz looked like a future superstar during his freshman season at Washington. He averaged 23.2 points, 5.9 assists, and 5.7 rebounds per game.
Fultz was the 7th ranked prospect in the 2016 ESPN Top 100. Those rankings don’t mean anything today but it just shows how highly he was thought of even during his high school days.
Some of the players ahead of them are playing like the future stars they were expected to be. Jayson Tatum had an amazing rookie season, leading the Celtics to the conference finals.
While some have struggled as well, Harry Giles wasn’t a top pick but he was the top-ranked player in the 2016 class. After missing his rookie season he has averaged just 5.1 points and 3.3 rebounds per game in 16 games this season.
It’s still too early to judge any of these young guys. A fresh start in a new city would do any struggling young player some good.
Fultz is only 20 years old. If it doesn’t take first-round value to get him then it is worth the risk for most teams to take a chance on him.
The Grizzlies are still all in on Mike Conley there’s no doubt about that. Despite that, it is never to early to start thinking about the future.
Conley is playing at an all-star level but he is 31 years old. Add in the fact that Marc Gasol is 34 years old and this team needs to start thinking about the future.
Jaren Jackson Jr. gives them a future star down low but they still need that guy at the guard spot. Conley will be expected to be the guy for at least the next couple years but if they are able to take a chance on Fultz they should do so.
Fultz is a special young talent. He hasn’t played great to start his career but he will improve, the Grizzlies should pick up the phone and see what it would take to get him.
