A Look Back At Wayne Selden’s Time With The Memphis Grizzlies
By Chris Kern
Wayne Selden started his NBA journey as a member of the Memphis Grizzlies but now that chapter of his basketball career is over. He has been traded to the Chicago Bulls.
Wayne Selden never had a huge impact on the Memphis Grizzlies but he still had some good moments we can look back on.
He had many highlight reel slam dunks as well as being a starter in a playoff game during his rookie season.
Selden attended the University of Kansas as a five-star recruit and many thought it would be a one-year stay for him.
His freshman year didn’t go as planned and he ended up staying for three seasons. Even with the extra time in college, he went undrafted.
In his time with the Grizzlies Summer League team, he played like a star and a guy who should be a part of the teams long-term future.
It never worked out for whatever reason but that’s not to say he didn’t have any good moments because that’s not true.
He just was never able to perform on a consistent basis and that’s what led to him being dealt to the Chicago Bulls. Maybe a fresh start will do him good and maybe he will be able to get more playing time because of it.
His athleticism is out of this world and it led to many highlight reel dunks. He’s been throwing down posters since he was in high school and Grizzlies fans saw up close how special his dunking ability is.
His health has held him back some in Memphis especially last season. It would’ve been a great opportunity for him to get big minutes and show what he can do but injuries kept him from doing so.
In his rookie season with the team, he played in all six playoff games against the San Antonio Spurs despite playing just 11 games for the team in the regular season.
He did a good job defensively guarding Kawhi Leonard as he even started two games that series due to an injury to Tony Allen.
The Grizzlies lost that series in six games but they thought they had maybe found their shooting guard of the future in Selden.
Even since that didn’t work out you can’t call him a failure. His time in Memphis was short but it is a stepping stone for his next stop, his time in the NBA is far from over.
