Jevon Carter

Jevon Carter struggled to find a role early in the season but it seems as if he may have earned the backup point guard spot going forward.

He has played fantastic defense so far frustrating opposing star players such as James Harden and Chris Paul.

His ability to make opponents uncomfortable is nothing new as he won Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year in both his Junior and Senior seasons.

He does need to improve on the offensive side of the ball if he wants to reach his full potential. In his first seven NBA games, he is averaging just 3.4 points on 4.6 shot attempts per game.

He hasn’t gotten comfortable shooting the ball but that will come with time. He has shot the ball well in the G-League so we should expect his numbers to rise in a big way soon.

In 13 G-league games so far he has averaged 17.8 points, 5.1 rebounds, 4.9 assists, and 3.1 steals per game. He has done it all for the Hustle which has Grizzlies fans excited for the future.

It will continue to take time for him to translate his college and even G-league success into the NBA but it will happen eventually.

He just needs to be given the opportunity to learn while getting minutes and it seems as if that is happening. We’ll have to see how he performs as the primary backup point guard going forward before we put any real expectations on him.

The way he has played so far we should expect him to at least be the backup point guard going forward and who knows, maybe he can run the show one day as the Grizzlies starting point guard.
