Here and Now

The Los Angeles Lakers have the clearest impetus to go all-in on win-now of any franchise in the NBA. Marc Gasol, with his prime dwindling, surely wants to compete for an NBA title. It is kind of serendipitous, all these years later.

Gasol’s situation is particularly delicate for the Memphis Grizzlies in that he needs to be dealt to a team with the same urgency. If the Grizzlies shipped a franchise icon to another rebuilding project, a Front Office with plenty of recent embarrassment would be shamed yet again.

While there are undeniable Lakers ties to Anthony Davis through Klutch and Rich Paul, landing The Brow is no guarantee. Meanwhile, consolidating L.A.’s depth, adding a proven veteran winner, and increasing allure for potential free-agents, should all be among Magic Johnson and Rob Pelinka’s priorities.

While most of the NBA awaits either a chance to pounce on Davis, or its fallout, the Los Angeles Lakers and Memphis Grizzlies could get ahead of the madness known as NBA trade rumors. A Gasol deal would nudge both franchises further in their respective directions, while doing right by the perhaps Greatest Grizzly ever.
