Delon Wright may be the key incoming piece from recent transactions that will determine the Memphis Grizzlies’ success at the 2019 NBA Trade Deadline.

Most people are focused on the fact the Memphis Grizzlies received a second round Draft pick — which will come to fruition in 2024 — as the only intriguing piece of all the guys shipped to Memphis at the NBA Trade Deadline for Marc Gasol. However, it is time to be mindful of Delon Wright.

I dared to dig deeper into one player the Grizzlies were handed for Marc after being told by a Toronto Raptors fan of how good said player quietly has become. He is the younger brother of former NBA veteran Dorell Wright.

Delon Wright played his college ball at the University of Utah, where he played all four seasons and became the first player in Utah history to make the Pac-12 All-Defense team. He led his senior roster to a top-25 ranked season.

Wright has spent the past four seasons as an understudy to likely future Hall-of-Famer Kyle Lowry, so minutes and opportunity on-ball came at a premium for the 26-year-old.

I compare Delon’s situation to that of legend John Stockton in the first few years of his career, or Eric Bledsoe and Victor Oladipo of most recent fame. These are guys who played behind future Hall-of-Fame players, so they did not get to do much.

Delon Wright is my bet to become the X-Factor of the Memphis Grizzlies trade from this past Thursday. Here, Beale Street Bears breaks down the 6’5,” 190-pound combo guard’s game.
