Mike Conley nearly knocked off the eventual winner of the Skills Challenge on NBA All-Star Saturday Night, but it was not enough. Here is how his performance symbolizes the Memphis Grizzlies’ 2018-19 season.

The Memphis Grizzlies had representation via Mike Conley in the 2019 NBA All-Star Weekend’s Taco Bell Skills Challenge on Saturday evening.

Breaking out of his sweats, Conley decided to wear this season’s new gray and yellow “GNG” Grizzlies uniform. It was a nice touch that reminded the field of where Mike has been and where he is coming from. After all, his event introduction included the announcer proclaiming Conley has the “pride of the Grindhouse.”

Though he was an underdog in the competition in comparison to the young Rising Stars, Mike Conley fell just shy of defeating the competition’s eventual victor in the second overall match of first round action.

The invitation was another step forward in the 11.5-season NBA career of the Grizzlies’ face of the franchise. Though he did not win, he gained more national attention, as did the city of Memphis. Being a small-market team, these are moments that must be appreciated.

Beale Street Bears will now analyze the similarities between Mike Conley’s Skills Challenge performance and the Memphis Grizzlies’ 2018-19 regular season. Oddly enough, the two go hand in hand all too well.
