Memphis Grizzlies: Jevon Carter Gives Back to West Virginia During NBA All-Star Break
The Memphis Grizzlies’ Jevon Carter spent his NBA All-Star break visiting his alma mater. This week, he has spent valuable time at West Virginia.
A handful of NBA rookies participated in Friday’s Rising Stars Challenge during NBA All-Star Weekend. Others spent a few days going on vacation to get a break from the hardwood. For the Memphis Grizzlies‘ Jevon Carter, he went back to familiar territory in West Virginia.
After spending four years at West Virginia University, Carter cannot stay away from Mountaineer country for very long. Who can blame him? As much as the Grizzlies love him being a piece of their future, Mountaineer fans love him even more.
Jevon Carter was a Consensus All-American and a two-time NABC Defensive Player of the Year while donning a West Virginia uniform. He assisted the Mountaineers to an astounding 105-39 record (a winning percentage of 72.9%) over the duration of four NCAA seasons.
To say the least, Jevon made his mark on WVU. We are talking about 1,758 total points scored. 538 rebounds corralled. 559 assists collected. Plus, you cannot leave out the 330 steals, which is an area that made him feared across the country.
After those four years of receiving the support of the West Virginia faithful, and their following of Jevon into the professional ranks as a member of the Memphis Grizzlies, the NBA rookie did not hesitate to give back to the community that has showed him so much love.
On Tuesday, while attending a West Virginia home game, Jevon Carter wrote a check in the amount of $27,500 to benefit the Norma Mae Huggins Cancer Research Endowment Fund.
This selfless act demonstrates what West Virginia means to Jevon, but also highlights himself as a person. When the Memphis Grizzlies drafted Carter with the 32nd overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft, they nabbed a player that not only fits in on the court, but also meshes well off the court with a community-oriented team.
Jevon made the most of the past few days while not attending any of the NBA All-Star Weekend festivities. However, as he steps into a role of increasing minutes over the next weeks, months, and new season altogether, he will look to become a participant in the Rising Stars Challenge as an NBA sophomore.
Though NBA minutes were limited for Jevon Carter in the first half of the 2018-19 season, he has quickly made a name for himself. Just ask guys like Chris Paul and James Harden. The best is yet to come for this West Virginia alum because karma always finds its way back around.
