Memphis Grizzlies: How Bruno Caboclo could be Memphis’ Giannis Antetokounmpo
By Blake Monroe
At first thought, It may be a stretch but could Bruno Caboclo become the Memphis Grizzlies version of Giannis Antetokounmpo?
Both foreign players; One an all-star, while the other one is trying to make a name for himself in the league. The similarities between these players provide hope to many Memphis Grizzlies fans. For many NBA fans, the name Bruno Caboclo might not mean much but for Grizzlies fans, the name already means quite a bit. Giannis Antetokounmpo is an MVP candidate but in just a short time with the Grizzlies, Caboclo has shown off some similar skill.
Caboclo has shown the ability to play lockdown defense, knock down mid-range jumpers, and make highlight reel blocks, against some of the leagues best players. When you read that last sentence, you can start to get a feel for how he can relate to one of the MVP frontrunners.
Former Toronto Raptor and Sacramento King, Caboclo continues to grow in the NBA. It was not until he joined the Grizzlies, that he truly became a “quality” player though.
His stats may not be the same as Antetokounmpo, but he does have a 4-inch wingspan advantage which has proven to have had a great impact, during the Grizzlies struggles, this season.
At a wingspan of 7 foot 7 inches, Caboclo is able to shoot over most players, draw easy fouls, and swat the ball with little effort. This makes him a force to be reckoned with in close game situations, which has been the majority of the Grizzlies’ games.
Many may read this article and think, “No way” but give it another season with the Grizzlies and the doubters will start to see the resemblance.
All it takes is the right team and the right situation. That being said, Memphis is that team and this season and offseason is the situation. Take Avery Bradley for example, an average player for the Clippers, who has been playing at a high level for Memphis.
Saying he will be as good as Antetokounmpo is crazy but Caboclo’s frame is very similar. He has a long ways to go but he certainly has the potential to possess some of the abilities that Antetokounmpo currently plays with.
