April Fools! Worst Possible Max Contract Offer

It is not very often the Memphis Grizzlies land a big name in NBA Free-Agency. In times they do, such as the case of Vince Carter in 2016, he was on the downhill slide of his NBA career and it was for a cheap contract offer.

Memphis’ best case is to develop their own players (oh, boy) and/or trade for valuable contributors. When the summer of 2016 arrived, they had plenty of cash to spend on free-agents, and one of two max contract offers were decided upon. Mike Conley would be given a blank check and he thankfully remained loyal to the franchise. However, Conley persuaded another player to commit to the Grizzlies’ other max allotment.

Chandler Parsons was an attractive free-agent in 2016. He was the point-forward type with a smooth three-point jumper. His name became known across the league after finding success in the NBA Playoffs as a member of the Houston Rockets.

It was not just the Memphis Grizzlies that were intrigued by Parsons’ skill set. Prior to signing with the Grizzlies, Chandler declined a lucrative offer from the Portland Trail Blazers. The city of Memphis was ecstatic at the time because they landed a scorer/shooter, which should have been the last piece to their championship-seeking puzzle.

April Fools!

More from Beale Street Bears

If only. Since joining the Memphis Grizzlies in 2016, Chandler Parsons has battled injury after injury. Even at his peak with Memphis, which has happened only in the past couple of weeks, Parsons resembles only a shell of his former self.

The lateral movement is gone. He only has one speed. Only recently has Chandler regained some lift on his outside jumper. As of April 1st of 2019, Parsons has appeared in only 90 of 240 total possible games.

The fan base has the right to feel robbed as they are paying to watch the stars of their hometown squad take the floor night-in and night-out. As they continue to pay ticket prices, Chandler Parsons has missed more games than he has played. There is still some time for him to turn things in the right direction, but it will take a lot for Chandler to swing fans in his favor. This has been an April Fools’ joke of sorts that keeps on giving.
