Memphis Grizzlies: Top 5 Decisions We Wish Were April Fools’ Jokes
April Fools! Failed Communication
The failed trade attempt (if you want to call it that) of Tyreke Evans was bad. Other players and teams certainly take notice of things like that. Who would want to play for a club that does not keep their word on trading a player, especially after sending him away from the team? That insinuates a deal is nearing completion, which was false in Evans’ case.
The Memphis Grizzlies somehow managed to one-up the Evans situation by entering trade discussions as part of a three-team transaction in the current 2018-19 NBA season. They would have landed a huge component to their impending rebuild in Kelly Oubre, but…April Fools!
Inside of a ridiculous situation, there was miscommunication on which player with the last name of Brooks would be outbound. Memphis was stating MarShon Brooks, but the Phoenix Suns were under the impression it was Dillon Brooks. The Washington Wizards — the trade originators — were not accepting the blame and neither were the Suns or Grizzlies.
All other 27 NBA teams had to be laughing at these three teams. In 2019 — with all of the technology in the world — and these three franchises did not know which Brooks was on the trading block? It is very hard to believe, but then again, the deal had reached completion except for this throw-in blunder.
Washington and Phoenix would go on to complete a trade between themselves, but the Memphis Grizzlies would continue to lose. This upset players’ feelings. It messed with team chemistry. This really changed the Grizz and sent them reeling into the bottom portion of the league standings they currently reside. Thankfully the Grizzlies’ Front Office made good on their plethora of deals at February’s NBA Trade Deadline as it lessened the blow from this failed three-team trade.
