NBA Draft 2019: Mock Draft 1.0
By Chris Kern
Ashton Hagans had some struggles during his freshman season at Kentucky. He seemed to be a potential lottery pick coming into the season and now it seems more likely he falls out of the first-round or goes back to Kentucky rather than be selected that high. That doesn’t mean he can’t be a good player though.
During this season he averaged 7.7 points, 4.3 assists, 2.6 rebounds, and 1.6 steals per game. His ability to defend is something many players don’t possess. He did shoot just 28% from three-point range which will have to improve if he wants to succeed at the next level. Despite some of his struggles, he has all the tools to become a quality backup point guard.
The Utah Jazz would be an ideal fit for him with their style of play. They also have a lot of question marks at the point guard spot which makes this a very possible landing spot. With Ricky Rubio‘s impending free agency and the possible pursuit of Mike Conley, it could lead to them drafting another point guard as well.
If they were to trade for Conley or sign another free agent it could be a very good spot for Hagans to come in and be the backup point guard. They did draft Grayson Allen last year in the first round so they may prefer to draft someone who can make more of an immediate impact. It may require some time in the G-League, but Hagans will be a quality player in the NBA.
