Memphis Grizzlies: Race To Convey Gets More Difficult After Home Loss Against Dallas
By Chris Kern
The Memphis Grizzlies race to convey got more difficult after the home loss against Dallas. Delon Wright and Justin Holiday both stood out despite falling short.
In a game they should’ve won, the Memphis Grizzlies were unable to capitalize down the stretch and they would then go on to lose in overtime. They didn’t pick up the victory, but we still witnessed a very good team performance, led by Delon Wright and Justin Holiday.
Wright picked up a second straight triple-double as he completely dominated these two games against the Mavericks. He finished with 20 points, 13 rebounds, and 12 assists in this game. A crazy stat from these two games is that he had just one combined turnover, which was in Sunday’s game.
His ability to create for himself and others is for real and isn’t just because of playing lesser competition. He isn’t going to drop triple-doubles against the top teams, but he has shown himself to be a very good player in this league.
Justin Holiday also had a big game, especially on the offensive end. He finished with 30 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals. He is a solid two-way player who will hopefully be back in Memphis next season. His 30 points were a career-high as well.
Those two led the way, but it was a full team effort as eight players finished in double figures scoring. Julian Washburn was the only player who played that didn’t score at least ten points. Chandler Parsons was the one guy who really struggled on offense as he went just 3-15 from the field, but he still made an impact as he finished with 10 points, 7 assists, and 5 rebounds.
There were a lot of positives in this game, but at the end of the day it resulted in a loss and that’s not what the Grizzlies are trying to do. They want to convey the pick and that loss could be what keeps that from happening.
Whether the decision to try to convey the pick is the right thing to do is debatable, but that’s what the team is doing so we have to trust that they’re doing the right thing. Two other teams, they’re battling with for position in the Washington Wizards and the New Orleans Pelicans were both in action on Sunday night.
The Wizards blew a lead late in New York against the Knicks to fall to 32-49. They host the Celtics on Tuesday in what could be a game that Boston has nothing to play for. Either way, I would expect the Wizards to continue their “tank” in pursuit of a better draft pick.
The Pelicans were able to pick up a win over the Kings on the road to improve to 33-48 which puts them 0.5 games ahead of Memphis. They host Golden State on Tuesday to end their season and with the Warriors very possible resting guys, that could be a very winnable game.
The Grizzlies have a lot of scenarios they can discuss with other teams, but they just need to focus on themselves. They let one slip away against Dallas, but if they can win their final two games, they will at least have a shot to convey the pick.
