Memphis Grizzlies News: Race To Convey Still Alive As They Finish 8th After Tiebreaker
By Chris Kern
The Memphis Grizzlies have been playing to convey their first-round pick in this years NBA Draft all season long and even after the results to the tiebreaker, they still have a chance to do so.
The Memphis Grizzlies are making big changes to their organization and they possibly could be without a first-round pick in this year’s NBA Draft. It will come down to the NBA Draft Lottery to determine whether or not they keep the pick.
They were in a three-way tie at 33-49 to end the season with the New Orleans Pelicans and the Dallas Mavericks. All the NBA Standings tiebreakers were done with the ping pong balls similarly to how they do the actual draft lottery.
These three teams were being done to determine the 7th, 8th, and 9th spots in the draft lottery. With the way the NBA Draft is nowadays they very possibly could change when the lottery takes place, but here are where they ended up prior to that, which takes place on May 14th.
New Orleans finished with the 7th spot, Memphis will be in the 8th spot, and Dallas will be in the 9th spot. If the Grizzlies do end up keeping their pick they will be looking to add another young star to pair with Jaren Jackson Jr. and the rest of this team for the long haul.
It is still possible that a team from 9-14 jumps into the top four so who knows if this will be where the Grizzlies end up picking. They will have still a 42.6% chance to convey the pick to Boston. You would rather be in the 9th spot to make that happen, but the chances are still possible. They also could jump into the top four as well as there’s a 26% chance of making that happen.
You can try and think of it like this. There’s a 68.6% chance that they either pick in the top four or convey the pick and when you think of it like that, then this result isn’t as bad as it may seem to be.
If you were one who wanted the pick conveyed then you still have hope as it still is possible, but they will need the luck of the lottery to make that happen. If it isn’t conveyed the Grizzlies will have a chance to add a good young talent such as De’Andre Hunter or Coby White.
