Memphis Grizzlies: 5 Of The Top Head Coach Candidates Available
By Chris Kern
Becky Hammon
Becky Hammon has gained a lot of experience as an assistant under Gregg Popovich in San Antonio. If she were to become a head coach it would make her the first female head coach in the history of the NBA.
It’s probably only a matter of time before that happens. She is just 42 years old and continues to grow in the coaching ranks as one of the bright young minds in the game. In 2015 she became the first head coach of a Summer League team and she had success as well, leading the Spurs to the Summer League title.
Many guys who have played in San Antonio know how good of a coach she is. Gregg Popovich is possibly the best coach in NBA history, so she has learned from the best and will be ready whenever she is given a chance to run her own team.
Hammon also was a very good player in San Antonio during her WNBA career. She hit many clutch shots during her career which earned her the name “Big Shot Becky”. Being a former WNBA star is cool, but it’s not why she’s in the position she is in today.
She is a head coach candidate because she can flat out coach. It doesn’t matter that she’s a girl all that matters is she can coach. When your building your basketball team you want the best head coach you can possibly get and if that’s Hammon then you hire her. At the very least they could discuss her chances internally, but don’t be surprised if she gets interviews in Memphis, or elsewhere.
