Weaknesses

Tyler Dorsey’s offensive game is mostly a strength, but it does come with some limitations as well. His transition to the NBA physicality has been difficult for him at times and is something he still continues to work on.

He is a 6’5″ guard so the size is there, but when he was in college he was the point guard that was taller than most of his opponents and he was able to hit shots just because he was taller. It has been an adjustment for him coming into the NBA and part of that has to do with him not having a true position.

The college game is much different, but during his time at Oregon, he was the point guard so he had the ball in his hands so often. He is more than capable of playing the shooting guard spot, but there are some opponents who can give him fits due to their size. The way the NBA game is changing keeps that from being a large concern, but if he would get stronger it could help.

We saw on many occasions he put up big offensive numbers, but we also saw him struggle just as much. He is a young player though so he will continue to polish his game and consistency should be a part of that.

Another weakness of his that he certainly can improve is his free-throw shooting. He made just 63% during his time in Memphis which is unacceptable for a guard in the NBA. He has shown he can knock them down also as he made 71%

When you’re trying to find a place in the NBA you have to be able to do the little things well and that includes free-throws and defense. Just look at what Ivan Rabb has done. He is a big man so it’s different, but that is the kind of effort you need when you’re trying to find a spot despite having some weaknesses.

He did struggle some on the defensive end, but he was able to manage for the most part. If he can continue to put in the work required I wouldn’t be surprised to see him back with the Grizzlies next season.
