Whenever you hire a college coach you have to make sure you get the right guy. It takes a unique coach to succeed at both the pro and collegiate level. The Memphis Grizzlies need someone who can help them develop their young core and build for the future.
Some college coaches have proven to be great in the NBA, most notably Brad Stevens. He had a lot of success at Butler and has been able to have success in the pros as well with the Boston Celtics.
We’ve also seen many coaches who have struggled at the pros. Fred Hoiberg was never able to accomplish what he wanted to with the Chicago Bulls and Billy Donovan seems to possibly be on his way out of Oklahoma City.
Many top college coaches wouldn’t consider moves to the NBA. Some elite coaches such as Roy Williams and John Calipari are likely past the days they would consider the jump, but there are some guys who would make sense.
