NBA Draft 2019: 5 Potential Second Round Steals
By Chris Kern
Ty Jerome
Ty Jerome had a very good junior season as he helped lead Virginia to a championship with a win over Texas Tech in the finals. His improved play has him being discussed as a possible option for team’s drafting late in the first round.
He impacts the game on both ends of the floor which will help him find a role on some NBA teams second unit. The way he was able to control the college game is exactly what you want out of a backup point guard. He could play some at the shooting guard spot as well though since he is 6’5″.
He played in 37 games this past season averaging 13.6 points, 5.5 assists, 4.2 rebound, and 1.5 steals per game. He posted percentages of 44% from the field, 40% from three-point range, and 74% from the free-throw line.
The way he carried this team throughout the NCAA Tournament was very impressive. His star teammates such as De’Andre Hunter and Kyle Guy struggled in many games, but he continued to lead them to wins over some top teams.
A comparison from NBADraft.net says he could have a similar career to Greivis Vasquez who was actually drafted by the Grizzlies. They are both big point guards who have the skills to play multiple positions.
The versatility in today’s NBA is so big and has helped so many players carve out roles in the NBA. Teams often look for backup point guards early in the second round so that’s likely where he will be selected as well.
The Grizzlies took Jevon Carter at 32 in the 2018 NBA Draft and Jalen Brunson and Devonte’ Graham came immediately after at 33 and 34 respectively. In some drafts it’s different, but you can typically find a quality backup point guard in that spot, and that’s exactly what Ty Jerome can be.
