The Memphis Grizzlies are starting their rebuild and they are going to be looking to acquire young talent. There are a variety of other teams they can learn from to succeed.

The Memphis Grizzlies are starting the next chapter of their franchise and they will have some important decisions to make this offseason and over the next couple of years. They first need to hire a head coach who they trust and provide that coach with stability if they struggle through the first few seasons.

That’s been a problem with organizations such as the Phoenix Suns and it’s tough for young players to develop under those circumstances. The Grizzlies have good young players and they need to do right by them and give them the best chance to succeed.

They do have a few good young players that they can build around for the future. Jaren Jackson Jr. is the obvious centerpiece, but guys such as Dillon Brooks, Kyle Anderson, and Jonas Valanciunas all seem like they could be in Memphis for the long haul.

Those are solid players, but they need to continue to fill out this roster if they want to become a playoff contender. There are a variety of approaches they can take in doing so as we have seen around the league from different teams.

The tank approach is one that could be considered but with the new draft lottery rules, it is harder than it once was and those rules could continue to change. You always will be happy to get top picks, but those don’t work out as we have learned first hand especially with the selection of Hasheem Thabeet.

Then you have other strategies such as being more developmental focused and prioritizing value picks later in the draft by getting guys who fit the culture you’re trying to build while also getting guys who were slept on. The San Antonio Spurs have done a great job with this, but even just hitting on one or two guys later on in the draft who make an impact such as the Lakers did with Kyle Kuzma and Josh Hart can really help build a team.

The Grizzlies have to find the right recipe for success for them. It’s different in each organization and if they don’t make the right decisions then this rebuild will be a very long one. Here are three teams that made the playoffs that they can learn from as they begin the next chapter of their franchise.
