Memphis Grizzlies Continue to Make Moves as Tayshaun Prince Receives Promotion
The Memphis Grizzlies’ next move in retooling their organization includes a promotion for Tayshaun Prince.
With less than two months until the 2019 NBA Draft arrives, the Memphis Grizzlies are putting permanent pieces in place within their organization. As they strive to achieve a collaborative and robust Front Office, Tayshaun Prince will now operate in a role of greater importance.
On Saturday, the Memphis Grizzlies made the official announcement regarding Prince’s new title along with a description of his specific duties. The press release read as follows:

Now with Chris Wallace demoted from the General Manager role and the Grizzlies entering an entirely new Front Office setup, the NBA world will now see all that Prince can offer on the executive level. This is far more exposure for him than his former role of lending advice and coaching the team’s youth behind the scenes.

It is an excellent move to have an NBA World Champion place fingerprints on the Memphis Grizzlies’ scouting and developmental efforts. Plus, with Tayshaun Prince having spent three seasons (139 total regular season games played) as a member of the Grizzlies organization, he knows what the team, city, and culture is about and what Memphis needs in order to get back to title contention.
Prince was on the Memphis Grizzlies’ roster when the team reached the Western Conference Finals for the first and only time in franchise history in 2013. Though he is known primarily for his contributions with the Detroit Pistons, Tayshaun has stuck with the Grizzlies since retiring from playing. It is honestly surprising considering he once looked like a lifetime member of the Pistons organization.
Nearly one year ago, Tayshaun Prince interviewed for a position with the Pistons, but ultimately remained in Memphis, Tennessee. That turned out to be a great decision on his behalf given today’s news of his promotion. His responsibilities will grow within this new role, and it is great to have a former player in this position that can really relate to the current guys on the roster.
Prince has quickly climbed the ladder within the Grizzlies organization, and it should be safe to assume he is far from being done. This may be another step in preparing him for a future General Manager role somewhere in the NBA, whether it is in Memphis, Detroit, or some other franchise.
