NBA Draft 2019: 3 Prospects To Consider With Potential Additional First-Round Pick
By Chris Kern
Tyler Herro
Tyler Herro had some ups and downs during his freshman season at Kentucky, but he really came on late in the season as he showed himself to be a very good player on both ends of the floor. This past season he averaged 14 points, 4.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 1.1 steals per game. Those numbers don’t jump off the chart, but this was a very balanced Kentucky team that relied on team ball rather than focusing on their stars.
His ability to shoot the ball isn’t in question, but he did make just 36% of his shots this season so he will need to at least keep that percentage as he goes to the next level. He also showed himself to be an elite defender as he shut down three-point sharpshooter Fletcher McGee in their second round matchup, holding him to just eight points on 4-17 shooting, including an NCAA record 0-12 from three-point range.

He had some really good all-around games as well most notably with his game against Arkansas. In that game, he finished with 29 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals on 9-10 shooting including 5-6 from three-point range. He was a key part of them rallying from behind double digits in the second half to pick up a home win.
His short wingspan is concerning, but he has all the skill and talent to become a quality shooting guard in the NBA. He was a good defender in college and he has a chance to be an efficient high volume shooter as well. For him to defend bigger guards will be challenging, but based on what we saw during his time at Kentucky he should be able to hold his own.
All three of these players would be good additions to the Grizzlies young core. Dillon Brooks is a good player, but they don’t really high a quality guard that they can trust to go forward with for the future.
The Miami Heat reportedly being interested in Mike Conley are one of the ways the Grizzlies could add another first-round pick, but even with those rumors it still seems unlikely. If they do get another first-round pick though, these three players should be their top targets.
