Indiana Pacers

The Indiana Pacers have a big offseason ahead of them as they look to take the next step towards contending in the eastern conference. They have a good core to build around led by Victor Oladipo and Myles Turner, but they have a handful of players set for free agency that they will need to re-sign or find a way to replace.

They were one of the teams that considered trading for Conley prior to the deadline, but after Oladipo got injured they didn’t feel like it was worth it to make that deal at the same time. Oladipo could miss some time to start the season, but assuming he’s healthy to help this team make a postseason run this would be a trade that makes sense for them.

Last season their starting point guard was Darren Collison, but they also had quality backups in Cory Joseph and Aaron Holiday. Collison and Joseph are both free agents this summer, but Holiday was just a rookie this past season and the team thinks very highly of him. There’s a chance that he would be included in a trade for Conley, but if they view him as the starting point guard of the future they could find a way to make a deal happen without him.

They also have other free agents such as Thaddeus Young and Bojan Bogdanovic. They will try to find a way to keep both of them, but it may be difficult to do so if they plan on bringing in Conley or any other big-time acquisition.

The Pacers will have to determine whether it’s worth it for them to go ahead and trade for Mike Conley to help them improve or if they’d rather stick to the course and continue to build around the core that they have. If they do a trade for Conley that would give them one of the best backcourts in the NBA as well as a very good core that has the chance to compete in the Eastern Conference.
