Nate Tibbetts

Christian Dudley: “Perhaps the most underrated — and best — candidate for the Memphis Grizzlies’ head coach opening is Portland’s Nate Tibbetts. Interestingly enough, this will be the second time the Grizzlies have interviewed Tibbetts for a head coaching job, with the first coming in 2016.

Surely this gives Nate Tibbetts a leg up on the competition. Why would the Memphis Grizzlies set up another interview with Tibbetts only to turn him down a second time? Crazier things have happened, yes, but this only confirms their intrigue with all the good things Nate has done within the Blazers organization, especially from a player development standpoint.

More from Grizzlies News

Since joining the Trail Blazers for the 2013-14 NBA season, Tibbetts has helped push Portland into the postseason each and every time. He has been around for the development and forward progression of backcourt killers Damian Lillard and C.J. McCollum, which is huge assuming Memphis indeed selects Ja Morant in a few weeks with their No. 2 overall NBA Draft pick.

While the list of candidates does not have much NBA head coaching experience, it comes down to taking a leap of faith with what these candidates have done behind the scenes. Though it has not earned Portland an NBA World Championship, Nate Tibbetts has helped boost Portland despite of injuries or other hardship. Honestly, they have overachieved in many instances, especially this season, though their season ended in a Western Conference Finals sweep via the Golden State Warriors.

If the Memphis Grizzlies are infatuated with taking another risk on a head coach rather than find a seasoned veteran at the helm, Nate Tibbetts absolutely deserves a shot this time around.”
