What Does Memphis Need?

The Memphis Grizzlies’ impending NBA free agency needs this summer are different, but more of the same. Instead of falsely clinging to ambitions of the playoffs, Memphis can look itself in the mirror this offseason.

They know they’re not going to be very good. As such the season won’t be defined as much by wins and losses as progress by youngsters and collective cohesion.

Memphis still has holes in the roster, but plugging those won’t be as paramount as fitting the Jackson/Morant developmental timeline. Signees should be on the right side of 30, and preferably operate off-the-ball with Morant’s arrival.

While keeping the youth movement in mind, Memphis could still use (drumroll please..) shooting. Huge surprise. Shooters that keep defenses honestly spread have escaped Memphis seemingly forever. Their desperation for distance threats led to signing Chandler Parsons, which effectively killed the GNG era.

Last season’s Grizzlies ranked 25th in both three-pointers attempted and three-point shooting percentage. Since then they traded Conley, their best three-point shooter, they have added Morant’s inconsistent jumper along with a stretch non-threat in Clarke.

While Kyle Korver is obviously an elite spacing threat, he may be flipped within months, and certainly isn’t a long-term piece. Memphis should set their cross-hairs to where youth and shooting intersect. Leading us to…
