Veteran Performance

When talking about young teams, veteran contributions can be overlooked. Veteran players are often asked to come in, teach the young guys, and just play a role on a losing team. So far this season, though, the veterans have been a focal point for the Grizzlies.

Let it be known that the veterans on this team are still fairly young players. Jae Crowder is the oldest active player on the roster, and he is only 29 years old. He’s in his prime as a tough 3-and-D wing. He’s considered a trade piece for the Grizzlies, as players of his caliber are in high demand across the league. Crowder’s stock is certainly high right now, as he has proven he can still be a good contributor for a contender. He’s averaging 10 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 assists. His shooting splits don’t look great, but that could be attributed to the system he’s in. Regardless, he’s still coming out and playing well for the team.

Solomon Hill is in a similar role. He’s also seen as a trade piece, and a 3-and-D type of player. He’s performed well, averaging 6 points, 3 rebounds, and 1.5 assists in about 17 minutes a night. A good sign for Hill is his field goal percentages, which are currently career highs. If he maintains them, he is also a player that could garner interest from contenders.

Jonas Valanciunas has been a key contriubtor for the team. He has held down the starting center spot, and is not considered a trade piece after signing a 3-year deal with the team during the offseason. However, some fans have wondered how the emergence of Brandon Clarke effects Valanciunas’ timeline with the team. He hasn’t produced the numbers he did late last year in Memphis, but he’s been solid. Currently averaging 12 points and 9 rebounds, Valanciunas has six double-doubles so far.
