Defensive Player of the Quarter: Kyle Anderson

Grit-N-Grind this is not.

With youngsters who aren’t as used to NBA defensive schemes and get bullied by stronger players, the Grizzlies were bound to struggle.

Memphis currently ranks 22nd in D-rating, while giving up 117 ppg, good for 27th. Those numbers are natural for a rebuilding team; the cause for concern lies deeper.

Jaren Jackson Jr should have this award locked up, after a rookie season that showcased the makings of a future DPOY candidate. Unfortunately, he’s mostly stalled or regressed on the defensive end.

Jackson is still infuriatingly foul-prone. He’s somehow fouling even more than last year; 4.1 times/game, tied for the league lead. His block and steal percentages have plummeted from his rookie numbers. And he still continues to be a total non-factor on the glass. Pat Connaughton and Tyler Herro grab more defensive boards per game, on slower teams.

Anderson wins this award almost by default; edging out Brandon Clarke in a two-horse race. Both are versatile forwards with great awareness who can body larger guards; Clarke with athleticism, Anderson with length and positioning. Slo-Mo’s high-IQ veteran play gives him a slight edge, also leading all Grizz regulars in DBPM.
