Ja Morant: Pros and Cons of the COVID Layoff
By AJ Salah
Con: Derails Rookie Momentum
It’s tough to imagine Morant’s current predicament. Just as he was hitting his stride – especially from a conditioning standpoint given the NBA’s lengthy season – the chair was pulled from under him.
Adapting to the physical grind of their first season in the pros is one of the most consistent challenges for rookies, regardless of position or build. While Morant was coping well by most indications, he won’t get to test or pace himself down the stretch. His accurate baseline for the physical toll of an NBA season won’t arrive until Year Two.
Perhaps even more damaging is the interruption of his growth on the court, and with teammates. Continuity has become an important keyword in team development, especially vital to a squad as young as the Memphis Grizzlies. A several-month layoff from playing together – and even physically associating – will no doubt present some rust when play resumes.
The good news for Morant and Memphis is that their roster is locked up for a while. After extending Dillon Brooks in February, the Grizzlies’ core is all under contract through at least 2022. They’ll have plenty of time to re-group and continue their ascent together.
