Ja Morant: Pros and Cons of the COVID Layoff
By AJ Salah
TBA: Putting In Work (?)
One of the many nebulous variables of the COVID layoff is its impact on player routines, workouts and practicing. While a handful of NBA facilities opened on Friday, the Grizzlies – as of writing – remain without an official announcement on re-opening.
This means it has been up to players – and their own resources – to eat well, rest properly, and keep their bodies and minds in game shape, all while staying home.
How exactly that unfolds may remain a mystery, even in today’s age of social media. Ja Morant’s recent online chat with Elliot Perry and the Grizzlies TEAM Mentor Program didn’t shed much light. Aside from time with family, there was little mention of what exactly Morant’s been up to since March 11.
Morant’s Instagram has been similarly unforthcoming. Again, lots of family time photos, some understandable throwbacks to his rookie campaign. But no lasting evidence of driveway shootarounds, home gym grinds or casual jogs.
This isn’t to suggest that Morant is getting lazy. By all indications he’s got a solid head on his shoulders, and the relentless work ethic that elevates a young man from no-name recruit, to being the NBA’s #2 draft pick.
Ja doesn’t much seem like the type to sit at home getting baked and eating Chick-Fil-A all day. We’ll give him the benefit of any doubt here.
