4. How will Memphis Bounce Back from the Layoff?

An NBA season is a brutal physical routine: (at least) six months of keeping your body in pristine condition, while going all-out (at least) 82 times, plus practicing and scrimmaging regularly, all while constantly shifting time zones and handling the pressures of stardom.

It can take players years to fully adjust to the cycle and adapt their bodies; ensuring they have enough in the tank, but don’t rest too much in the offseason. The Rookie Wall and Sophomore Slump are very real concepts, no matter the energy and athleticism that youth brings.

So imagine the effect of a player’s first or second year being derailed by what’s essentially a surprise offseason. One in which they can’t have any direct contact with teammates, and are critically limited for training and exercise options. Then, they have to return and play to decide that season, with little runway.

The Memphis Grizzlies have been thrown an undeniable curve-ball by COVID-19. As the NBA’s youngest team, they had perhaps the most to lose in terms of disrupted routine and continuity. Especially considering the injuries that ravaged their roster in February, and their new starter to acclimate, there will be lots of re-grouping needed.

How quickly they can gel and regain their momentum could decide their fate. If their youngsters are ready for training camp physically, and haven’t lost focus over months of nothingness, they’ll be a tough out.
