3. Milwaukee Bucks, Aug 13

At first glance, this game seems like a write-off vs. the dominant Bucks. But recall earlier when we noted the Raptors were likely the Grizzlies’ toughest remaining opponents.

The Bucks have a 6.5-game cushion on first in the East, enough to call their 1-seed a certainty. They’re also a high-continuity team of veterans, who will smoothly work out any kinks over the first few games.

As such, by the time Memphis rolls around – both teams’ last seeding game – they’re highly likely to rest their best players. Bet on Giannis Antetokounmpo sitting, probably Khris Middleton too, and maybe others.

It would make zero sense to test the bubble’s heightened injury risk in an essentially meaningless game. Getting reps in will matter less to Milwaukee who had little roster turnover, fairly good health, and can essentially use the First Round as a tuneup.

As such, this game becomes far more winnable for Memphis, who themselves could still be in a scrum. The West playoff chase might very well come down to the season’s final day. If this game becomes sudden-death to avoid a play-in, its drama will be paramount.

Memphis undoubtedly ran well with the re-scheduling. Facing a brutal stretch schedule initially, their disadvantage was blunted when the weakest teams were clipped. If Milwaukee plays the strings out as they should, it will pay extra dividends for the Grizzlies.
