No. 9: The Portland Trail Blazers, 2.5 Games Back

Previous Standing: 9

Current Record: 30-37

Most Recent Game: Win vs. Grizzlies

The Portland Trail Blazers win over the Memphis Grizzlies was an ugly one, to say the least, and as always it seemed mired in controversy, but a win is a win, and a win is exactly what Portland needed to stay in the running for the eighth seed.

Tied with the Pelicans for the ninth seed in the West at the hiatus, the Blazers picking up a win over Memphis put them in the best spot of teams not currently in the playoff race to overtake the Grizzlies for that final postseason spot. However, there were a few drawbacks to the win.

For one, Portland found themselves in foul trouble early. If Memphis had capitalized on more of their free throws, that would’ve put the Blazers down, and probably would’ve reversed the result of the game. For another, Damian Lillard didn’t have the best game. It might not be the biggest thing to worry about, three months of no basketball could certainly leave some with a little rust, but it is something Portland needs to keep an eye on in case that play continues. If the Trail Blazers want a shot at the eighth seed, they’ll need Dame at his top form.
