Why the Grizzlies should sign Blake Griffin
By Justin Lee
Even as Memphis Grizzlies fans, we all remember the posterizing dunks over great NBA defenders like Serge Ibaka and Pau Gasol. If that’s what you wanted, Blake Griffin is not the player for you anymore.
However, Blake Griffin still has a ton of value; it’s just a matter of which team will take him. Now that he has been bought out of the huge contract by Detroit, some teams can make a move on him.
One of those teams could be the Memphis Grizzlies. Why, you may ask? Well, the Grizzlies are a young team who could always add depth and talent, along with some versatility and leadership.
Blake Griffin was recently bought of of his contract with the Pistons, and the Grizzlies should be contenders to sign him.
Of course, there are plenty of questions surrounding Griffin. Those being his injury status and whether or not he can stay healthy throughout a season. Another being if he can accept a lesser role than he is used too.
No one quite knows the answers to those until the seasons end, but you have to find out somehow, and the Grizzlies should be a team that takes a flyer on former high-flier Blake Griffin.
Why the Memphis Grizzlies should sign Griffin
Looking at this Grizzlies roster, there is not a whole lot of big men on it after Jaren Jackson Jr. returns. Of course, you have Jackson Jr., Jonas Valanciunas, and Gorgui Dieng. However, adding a guy like Griffin who can play in the post and on the wing is a plus for any team.
Imagine this lineup: Ja Morant, Dillion Brooks, Blake Griffin, Jaren Jackson Jr., Valanciunas. Yes, that’s a big lineup, but nearly everyone in the lineup can stretch and space the floor.
The Grizzlies could even switch things up and move Jackson to the five, sliding Valanciunas to the second unit to provide even more scoring off the bench. Or, the Grizzlies could just have Griffin coming off the bench leading that unit.
There are so many things that Griffin brings to the team that national media won’t tell you. The fact he can fit in versatile lineups is just one of them.
So what exactly does a Blake Griffin look like in 2021? That’s a great question, and I’m glad you asked. Griffin still has exceptional play making for a guy of his size.
You can expect to see plenty of fast break playmaking from Griffin, along with some oops thrown and received. No, he isn’t the same athletically, but I’ll put my money on the fact that he can still rise up for a dunk.
Griffin can also stretch the floor and provide shooting and spacing for players like Ja to work in isolation, making it easier for him to get to the basket. The opportunities are endless, and I believe the Grizzlies should definitely make this move, signing Griffin to a deal as soon as possible.
