Memphis Grizzlies: Watch Ja Morant’s behind-the-back lob to Brandon Clarke (video)
It’s no secret that the Memphis Grizzlies have a talented young core on their roster. But in Wednesday night’s game, we learned just how talented one of our top guys is.
Obviously, Ja Morant is a great athlete, but many people believe that his passing and playmaking abilities rely on his athleticism. Any athletic guard gets that criticism. Russell Westbrook and Derrick Rose being strong examples of this.
Well, the haters don’t have much left to say now.
Memphis Grizzlies PG Ja Morant proved that he is an elite dime-dropper
Morant proved them wrong with multiple beautiful dimes in the same game. There are probably five or six eye-popping passes that I could choose from, but there were a couple that I’ll narrow it down to.
The earlier of the two was a pass to Xavier Tillman that had everybody wondering the same thing: “where did he come from?” Morant drew so much attention from the defense that he was able to fake a behind-the-back pass, confusing the defense and leaving Xavier Tillman all alone below the basket.
Thankfully, the Memphis Grizzlies Twitter account saw everything. See for yourself.
But somehow, this was not the best pass that Ja Morant made on Wednesday night against the Washington Wizards. In fact, this pass didn’t even compare to what we were about to see moments later.
It started with the Grizzlies running the ball down the court in transition — something that we’d see a lot of on Wednesday. Ja Morant was running down the court so fast that Russell Westbrook couldn’t even keep up.
Westbrook would foul Morant, leading to a dead ball and Morant still running full speed with the basketball in his hands. But in typical Morant fashion, he would not allow us a single mundane moment in this game.
Instead of handing the ball to a referee, he continued the fast break in style, jumping in the air, spinning the ball behind his back, and lobbing it up to Brandon Clarke, who finished the play with a dunk.
None of this actually counted, but it was a beautiful sight. It was also a reminder that the Grizzlies have one of the most special young players in the game.
Take a look at the play.
I know, it’s truly staggering. The most impressive part of this video is the lack of effort that he puts into the play. Have you ever seen somebody casually throw a behind the back lob pass that is perfectly positioned and finished for a dunk? I haven’t.
Ja Morant is truly a magician.
It’s just year two for the young point guard in Memphis, so we have not seen the end of his eye-popping plays. Hopefully, we get plenty more entertainment throughout the year en route to a playoff appearance. But even if we don’t, we can feel confident that this team is in good hands.
