The Memphis Grizzlies lead the league in steals

There’s an entire Beale Street Bears post about how the Grizzlies are leading the league in steals, but I’ll give you a shortened version.

The Grizzlies lead the league in steals.

Obviously, the team that leads the league in steals doesn’t guarantee them any success in the postseason, but this is a primary reason for why Memphis has been able to stay afloat. Without one of their best defenders, the Grizzlies are averaging 9.8 steals per game on the year.

They’re above the 2nd place team by almost an entire steal, cementing themselves as the undisputed pickpockets of the league. That said, their ability to create turnovers has a ripple effect on opposing offenses.

It’s one of the reasons why they’re able to get upset wins against teams that they are projected to lose against. On the contrary, this team has struggled on days where they don’t generate steals, so it’ll be an important area to succeed in.

The Grizzlies can’t rely on their steals to win games, but it’s something that they’re better than anybody else at. If they want to cement themselves as a playoff team, they’ll have to work to their strengths and keep this as a point of emphasis.
