Does Jaren Jackson Jr.’s return date change who the Grizzlies will sign?

Gorgui Dieng is a 31-year old center on the second-youngest team in the NBA. He came to Memphis as part of a trade deal and simply doesn’t fit into the lineup. This is quantified by the fact that he has played zero minutes this month.

It’s an unfortunate situation, as Dieng can be an extremely strong player, just not for the Grizzlies. But does this news about Jaren Jackson Jr. change things?

In short, no. The Grizzlies would have liked to keep him on the roster but they’ll manage to get much more for the same value. Dieng was waived on Friday afternoon.

It’ll be Jonas Valaciunas and 6’8″ second-round rookie Xavier Tillman. The Grizzlies may look to sign another big man in case of an injury but the Dieng buyout may lead fans to believe that they’re looking elsewhere.

The reason that this Grizzlies team bought out Dieng’s contract is to add more depth and a player or two that could instantly contribute to this team. That said, there are multiple options for this Grizzlies team.

They have options within the organization, as they may look to convert a two-way contract for one of the current G-League players. This could solve their issue when it comes to insurance for an injury.
