Ja Morant is the key to the Memphis Grizzlies’ success without JJJ

The Memphis Grizzlies will live and die by Ja Morant. He’s the franchise player and barring an injury or mind-numbingly stupid trade, nothing will change that.

This team performs as well as their weakest link. Well, actually, in this case, they perform as well as their best link. A direct correlation can be drawn between Morant’s level of play and this team’s results on the score sheet.

The young point guard is averaging 19.3 points and 7.5 assists per game this year. He has improved from last season in every category of the game. If not for early-season poor 3-point shooting, Morant could have bumped this scoring average well over 20.

But 3-point shooting hasn’t been the only issue. Morant has been generally inconsistent throughout the year, exploding on one night and disappearing the next. This has also been reflected on the scoreboard.

If this team wants to stay in the play-in conversation without Jaren Jackson Jr., they’ll have to find some sort of consistency. That begins with Morant, who is capable of dropping over 30 points on any given night. If he can find a way to do this in every outing, the Grizzlies could be unstoppable.
