Memphis Grizzlies: Ja Morant makes an argument for dunk of the year (video)
The Memphis Grizzlies took a beating against the Utah Jazz on Saturday night. Much like the first contest between these two teams, the Jazz would take an early lead and never look back.
Nobody on the Grizzlies came to play on Saturday night and it would show up on the scoreboard. Memphis would lose in embarrassing fashion, dipping below .500 once again. This team seems magnetized to having as many wins as they do losses and vice versa.
But among the brutal Memphis Grizzlies loss, Ja Morant made his presence known
With under a minute left in the third quarter, Ja Morant made the play of the game. The Grizzlies were in transition with a 2-on-1 advantage against the Jazz. Morant saw this and passed the ball to De’Anthony Melton, who would go on to lob it up to Morant, creating a beautiful play.
There’s not much more I can do to describe the beauty of this dunk; you’ll just have to watch it for yourself. Here’s the video posted by the Memphis Grizzlies on Twitter:
It’s hard to come up with words to describe this dunk. It was one of those plays that doesn’t necessarily look particularly difficult but is stunning to watch.
The most impressive part about the dunk was the height that he reached in the air. For a guy who couldn’t dunk during his senior year of high school, jumping over large NBA players seems like a pretty big feat, literally and figuratively.
Oh yeah, I guess I forgot to mention one thing about the dunk. Ja Morant jumped over 6’4″ Royce O’Neale in the process of dunking the ball. It wasn’t a contact dunk either — he cleared the small forward entirely.
Morant has proven again tonight that he is one of the most athletic players to ever set foot on an NBA court. He has a full-length mixtape from his time in the league already and it has only been a year and a half.
There’s no official dunk of the year award in the NBA but if there was, this would have to be heavily considered for it so far.
