The Memphis Grizzlies set a new record for points in the paint

As previously mentioned, the Grizzlies had an awful night defensively. It didn’t help that the Pacers couldn’t miss from deep, but Memphis helped them out by leaving guys open all night long. It was bad.

But enough of the bad, let’s talk about what the Grizzlies did right. In Sunday night’s game, the Grizzlies did a lot right. The first was scoring in the paint.

Memphis has always been a strong team when it comes to scoring points in the paint. So good, in fact, that they lead the league in points in the paint per game. Not the most glamorous stat, but something to be proud of for a team that’s missing their best big man.

All of that said, the Grizzlies reached a new level on Sunday.

Memphis would score 80 points in the paint against the Pacers, which would set a new franchise record on Beale Street. Unfortunately, it wouldn’t translate to the win column, but if they can patch things up defensively, they’ll be in good hands with this offense.

A large portion of the production came from Jonas Valanciunas, who, as mentioned, scored 34 points, most of which came in the paint. You’ll be hearing more about JV on the next slide.
