The Memphis Grizzlies set a new record for second-chance points

The trend continues of the Grizzlies being really good in categories that nobody talks about. What I’m referring to is the fact that the Grizzlies lead the league in second-chance points. While the stat isn’t unimportant, it’s not thought of as a must-get at the beginning of the year.

That said, nobody would have expected the Grizzlies to be leading in this category without their long-armed power forward in Jaren Jackson Jr. It was hard to predict the type of season that the Grizzlies would get from his co-star in the paint, Jonas Valanciunas.

Yes, back to Valanciunas.

The Lithuanian center had an incredible game beyond just putting the ball in the bucket. In 32 minutes, JV pulled in 22 rebounds on the night. It was one of the best games of his career and it should terrify other teams.

He made a 12-offensive rebound night look easy and basically single-handedly broke the second-chance points record for the Memphis Grizzlies. The rest of the team did do a strong job capitalizing on these opportunities, allowing the Grizzlies to set a new franchise high in second-chance points with 88, per Grizzlies PR.

Thankfully for the Grizz, a lot of JV’s offensive rebounds were converted into points. In the recent past, that couldn’t be said very often, as this team had often failed to do so. Hopefully, they’ll continue this trend, but try to place some defense in the future.
