The Memphis Grizzlies should see a boost in 3-point shooting

In the month of April, the Memphis Grizzlies are shooting the ball better than 27 NBA teams. That’s not a typo — the Grizz have been elite from long range this month.

Jaren Jackson Jr.’s return to the rotation will only improve this. JJJ takes a lot of threes and makes a lot of threes, at least relative to the rest of this team.

That said, this is a team that was an underwhelming unit from deep for the first portion of the 2020-21 season. They were average at best in terms of 3-point shooting percentage and below average in 3-pointers attempted.

It seemed like they had no interest in hitting long-range shots.

But as JJJ’s return comes closer, this team has been surging from deep. They’ve also been taking significantly more threes — five more a game, specifically. It’s entirely possible that Taylor Jenkins is preparing this team for a more 3-point heavy finish to the year.

Regardless of whether or not this team will see instant changes, they’re getting a bonus from long range in Jaren Jackson Jr.’s return. This team will no longer be a squad that only shoots wide-open threes, they’ll be taking as many as any other team in the league.
