The Memphis Grizzlies may not be a title contender this year, but this is a team that is a serious threat to the NBA down the road. The Grizzlies are one of the youngest teams in the league, while still holding a winning record. They’ve got serious potential.

There are young, talented players all throughout the lineup. You’ve got Dillon Brooks, who can step up and look like an NBA superstar on any given night. Grayson Allen and Desmond Bane, both of whom have become lethal shooters this season. Jaren Jackson Jr., who recently returned from injury as one of the best defensive players in the league.

But one player stands above them all.

Memphis Grizzlies PG Ja Morant is the leader of this young team

No matter what happens in the foreseeable future with this team, one fact will remain — Ja Morant is the leader of this team. The Grizz live and die by his performances and, whether you like it or not (you probably do), he’s the key piece going forward for this squad.

But in order for this team to take the next step and become a contender, Morant has to take that next step first. After a strong rookie season, he didn’t see as much improvement as some fans would have liked in year two.

That said, a return to normalcy with Jaren Jackson Jr. in the lineup should help him out. Add that to the fact that his 3-point shooting slump seems like it has come to an end and he is set for a breakout year three with the Grizzlies.

Here are three reasons why Ja Morant can force his way into the 2022 NBA MVP award race.
