Memphis Grizzlies key number: 9.4 steals per game

The Memphis Grizzlies are a team that doesn’t lead the league in a lot of flashy categories. They’ll never be the best scoring team in the NBA, although they are in the month of April, and while they may spend time in the top five in the NBA in scoring defense, they’re usually not at the top.

That said, they do lead the league in one very important category. Steals per game.

The Memphis Grizzlies average 9.4 steals per game. That’s good enough for the top spot in the NBA, where they lead the Philadelphia 76ers by a significant margin.

It’s not a surprise that the Grizzlies are so good at stealing the ball away from their opponents, as they were one of the better teams in the league last season with 7.9 takeaways per contest. That said, they have improved in a huge way, also opening the door to lead the league in points off of turnovers.

And while steals may seem like a relatively unimportant stat in the scheme of things, it’s actually extremely important. You can tell opposing teams get frustrated, and as a result, the Grizzlies can gain huge amounts of momentum at any given moment.

But this is only one of the important numbers for the Grizzlies in 2020-21.
