Bleacher Report just proposed a sickening trade for the Memphis Grizzlies
You’ve probably heard it already and you’ll likely hear it again — the Memphis Grizzlies are one star player away from being an extremely competitive team at the NBA Playoff level.
To an extent, this is true. That said, the reality of the situation is that we don’t really know if that’s true or not. Experts don’t know, fans don’t know, Taylor Jenkins doesn’t even know. With a roster that was the youngest in the league for a long stretch of time, this team won’t reach its full potential for at least a few more years.
That didn’t stop Bleacher Report from creating a mock trade to bring a star to the city of Memphis in a trade that was, well… bad.
Bleacher Report created a trade for the Memphis Grizzlies that will make your eyes bleed
Even though the Grizzlies are way too early in a rebuild to make a blockbuster trade, Bleacher Report explored the hypothetical. As a fellow sports blog, it’s impossible to knock them for giving it an effort. Unfortunately, this was not a good effort.
Here’s what the trade looked like:
This, for lack of better phrasing, would be the worst trade in Memphis Grizzlies history. Even if the Grizzlies were in the market to make a big trade for a star player, it would make no sense to give up their 21-year old forward with one of the highest ceilings in the league and a pair of first-round picks.
His age would match up well with the Grizzlies, but what are they really gaining from this? All season long, Memphis was thin on bigs and had a logjam of shooting guards. This would only worsen their issues.
Even more specifically, the trades are not even close to being of equal value. SGA is currently a better player than JJJ, but Jackson Jr. has a higher ceiling. You also get the feeling that whoever concocted this trade hadn’t seen the Memphis Grizzlies play all season long, as giving away Jonas Valanciunas seems extremely far-fetched for any die-hard fans.
In fact, Jonas Valanciunas and Jaren Jackson Jr. for Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Al Horford would be a net loss for the Grizzlies. Adding a couple of first-round picks and Justise Winslow simply adds insult to injury.
This trade will not happen, but keep an eye out for the Grizzlies in trade talks to get rid of Justise Winslow, who was left out of the late-season rotation. They may even look to trade one of their shooting guards to relieve the aforementioned logjam.
