Memphis Grizzlies: How Ja Morant’s father keeps his son motivated
The Memphis Grizzlies have one of the most competitive point guards in the league in Ja Morant. Say what you want about the former Murray State point guard — you cannot deny the fact that he is an elite competitor.
That much was made clear by his performance in the NBA Playoffs, where he broke a new Grizzlies franchise record in the category of points per game. Actually, saying that he broke the record is an understatement. Morant shattered the old record in a year where another player on the same team in Dillon Brooks beat the record himself.
Not only that, but Morant dropped 47 points in game 2 against the Utah Jazz, which was good enough for a new franchise record. In just his second season, he cemented himself as the best scorer in Grizzlies history.
But how does the soon-to-be NBA All-Star stay motivated each game?
Memphis Grizzlies PG Ja Morant’s father keeps him motivated, even after great moments
On Wednesday, sports fans got a deeper glimpse into how Ja Morant stays on his toes throughout his career, even after big moments that may put his head in the clouds. Morant joined Pardon My Take, a Barstool Sports podcast, and gave a more candid glimpse into his life than usual.
The Grizzlies point guard detailed how his father (Tee Morant), much like many of our own, struggled to show affection. Rather than being congratulated, Morant would often be critiqued. Here’s what he said his father said about him after winning the Rookie of the Year award.
"“I think when I won Rookie of the Year, his message after was, ‘Good job. You still suck.’ I mean, there ain’t too much I can do to, you know, make him say something positive.”"
Even though it may seem like Tee isn’t a loving father from that one quote alone, Ja elaborated, explaining how his dad gives an effort to be supportive, it just doesn’t come naturally. The PG continued to explain this by telling interviewers about moments where he did give an effort.
"“Yeah, just my two seasons. you know, right after this season, he was like, “You know I don’t do this, but I’m proud of you,” and then start laughing.”"
Hopefully, Morant’s dad continues with the tough love, as the Grizzlies will need their star to continue improving if they want a chance to make the playoffs again in 2021-22.
The Grizzlies star will look to move on from breaking playoff scoring recordings and this time, shatter the Memphis regular-season record.
